Career Opportunities

Well here’s a band who should need no introduction, yet despite their status as the harbingers of post-punk laced with dub, PiL have somehow alluded these pages until today.

Perhaps because dub formed more of a backbone to their sound than the overt skankiness of the usual spiky dread fair (if there is such a thing) but much of PiL’s claustrophobic output sidestepped convention, twisting up genres into distorted Baconesque caricatures of their former selves.

Take Careering from their Metal Box LP for example; the tradition of Jah Wobble’s rhythm track merely underlays a blanket of white noise, ear piercing guitar stabs, and atonal warbling. This may sound like I’m selling it short but I’ve just described my idea of a perfect record, now check them out performing it on The Old Grey Whistle Test back in 1980…

“that’ll do”.

I love this tune. It is pretty much perfect though I find the bass is a little to low in the mix. I crank it up a bit on the old EQ.

maybe they applied the “that’ll do” attitude to the mixdown too?
